3rd Principle of Liberty

The Power of Example: Leadership as a Mirror
Samuel Adams understood that a Constitution is merely a piece of parchment if the people and their leaders lack the moral will to follow it.
The Diffusion of Virtue: When a leader prioritizes the law over personal gain, it inspires the same behavior in the private sector and the community. This creates a "Moral Stability" that prevents the chaos of lawlessness.
The Burden of Leadership: Leadership is a stewardship, not a prize. A leader without virtue views their position as a tool for "Abuses and Usurpations"—a phrase famously used in the Declaration of Independence. They begin to see the public as a resource to be managed rather than a sovereign body to be served.
The Role of the Citizen: The Gatekeeper of Liberty
In a republic, the people are the final filter. If we elect leaders based on empty rhetoric or their alignment with "social movements" rather than their personal character, we have essentially abandoned the filter.
Vetting for Character: We often mistake charisma for competence. Principle 3 demands we look at a candidate’s private life and history of integrity. Do they keep their word? Are they fiscally responsible in their own affairs? If they cannot manage themselves, they cannot be trusted to manage the city or state.
A "Divine Mission": The Founders viewed voting as more than a civic duty; it was a sacred trust to protect the "blessings of liberty" for those not yet born. To choose a leader based on temporary promises at the expense of long-term virtue is a betrayal of that mission.
Historical Precedent: The Cost of Vice Thomas Jefferson’s grievances in the Declaration of Independence provide a checklist of what happens when virtue is absent in the halls of power:
Obstruction of Justice: A leader without virtue will always try to bypass the courts or the legislature to achieve their personal agenda.
Ignoring the Public Good: They prioritize the interests of a small "cabal" or elite group over the needs of the general population—much like we see today with fiscal mismanagement and the ignoring of local safety concerns in Ward 1.
Tyranny by Increments: Despotism rarely happens overnight. It begins when leaders prioritize their own power, leading to a "long train of abuses" that eventually makes liberty impossible to sustain.
Summary Table: The Virtue Filter
The Virtuous Leader The Corrupt
Leader Views office as a Stewardship Views office as Power/Profit
Respects the Limits of Law Seeks ways to Circumvent the Law
Values Transparency Operates in Secrecy/Bureaucracy
Prioritizes Community Safety Prioritizes Personal Optics
